I Holdsworth Ltd began trading in 1969, with a small warehouse in
Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire and enough borrowed cash for a small
freezer and chiller.
The company soon outgrew its premises, and in 1972 moved to its current head office location in Tideswell, Derbyshire.
By
the early eighties Holdsworth had reached a turnover of over £3
million, and a delivery range of 50 miles. Again it was time to expand,
so in 1986 the company acquired a second frozen food distribution
centre in St Neots, Huntingdonshire. This allowed for a far greater
delivery radius by serving London and South-East England, as well as
the areas already covered by the depot in Derbyshire.
During
the mid-eighties Michael Holdsworth canvassed other businesses in the
frozen food sector to gauge the advantages of forming a group of
companies. This resulted in the formation of Fairway Foodservice, a
consortium of independent businesses, which has its own administrative
centre and management team.
Fairway Foodservice allows its
members added technical support and increased buying power and lately
has afforded meaningful growth in national sales to the foodservice
sector.
The profits from Holdsworth have always been used to
increase its competitiveness by improving the business. We now have
depots in Derbyshire, Northampton, Evesham & South Wales, we have
240 staff and 6000 customers!
There are now three members of
the Holdsworth family involved in the day to day running of the
business which now operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and has a
turnover of nearly 44 million- a far cry from its humble beginnings in
1969!
